There are, as you might guess, a huge number of options. Therefore, in order not to turn this review into an endless list, we will again focus on cities through which it is convenient to get to certain mountainous areas, moving from east to west.

There are many ski resorts near Venice. The first thing that comes to mind is Cortina d'Ampezzo(Cortina d'Ampezzo), which has the reputation of one of the most fashionable winter resorts in Italy. From a skiing point of view, the place is also good - for both beginners and experienced skiers. If you travel from Venice by car, the road to Cortina will take about two hours (about 160 km). Regarding public transport routes, detailed information can be found on the Venice Airport website (see).

Near Cortina you should also pay attention to such places as Kronplatz(Kronplatz – Plan de Corones), Arabba(Arab) and region Alta Badia(Alta Badia). Right next door Val Gardena(Val Gardena), And Val di Fassa(Val di Fassa), and many other wonderful places. And all this diversity is available within a single ski pass, since all of the listed regions are part of the Dolomiti Superski superregion (a lot of useful information about this area can be found on the website dolomitisuperski.ru). Moreover, if Cortina and Kronplatz are sort of on the sidelines, then Arabba, Alta Badia, Val Gardena and Val di Fassa are actually one huge mountain range, between the resorts and pistes of which you can move without literally taking off your skis. In addition, this is where the famous Sella Ronda ski route is located, about 40 km long. True, it should be perceived more as a walking route: there are no steep descents or breathtaking turns here, but the views are stunning. The Dolomites are like that.

Another point that cannot be ignored is the following: the same Val Gardena and Alta Badia are closer to Innsbruck than to Venice. Therefore, if you are interested in these particular places, then do not lose sight of the opportunity to get here through Austria. Cortina d'Ampezzo, in turn, is located at approximately equal distances from Venice and Innsbruck. A little closer to Venice - San Martino Di Castrozza(San Martino di Castrorzza) And Civetta(Civetta). Both resorts are also part of Dolomiti Superski, but exist somewhat separately. Finally, even closer to Venice are places such as Nevegal(Nevegal), which is near Belluno, and Monte Avena – Croce d'Aune(Monte Avena – Croce d'Aune), not far from Feltre, but from the point of view of alpine skiing they are not at all as interesting as the regions discussed above.

Through Verona, as well as through Venice and Innsbruck, it is convenient to go to resorts in the Italian Dolomites. Among the Dolomiti Superski regions, the valleys are closest to Verona Val di Fiemme(Val di Fiemme) And Val di Fassa(Val di Fassa). So, for example, before Predazzo(Predazzo) And Canazei(Canazei) You can get there by car in about two hours. Val Gardena(Val Gardena) also nearby.

However, all these places have already been mentioned above. Let's not repeat ourselves. Not far from Verona there are other, no less interesting options.

In particular, one cannot help but pay attention to such resorts as Pinzolo(Pinzolo) And Madonna di Campiglio(Madonna di Campiglio). They are again within a two-hour drive from Verona, and form a single, well-equipped complex of ski slopes, suitable for children and adults, for beginners and pros.

It is also worth mentioning Andalo(Andalo), which is near Trento. It’s even closer – about an hour and a half by car. It will not be difficult to get here by public transport, since there is a direct train connection between Verona and Trento (see www.trenitalia.com), and regular buses run from Trento to Andalo (Linea 611, see www.ttesercizio.it).

In general, there are many winter resorts in the vicinity of Verona - there are places for every taste. For example, a vast complex Adamello-Ski(Adamello Ski), which includes both ski slopes of varying degrees of difficulty and cross-country ski tracks. Or small Peyo(Peio), known not only as a ski resort, but also as a thermal resort. Very close to Verona (about an hour's drive) you can find the town Recoare Terme(Recoaro Terme), no less famous for its thermal springs and, moreover, not deprived of opportunities for downhill and cross-country skiing.

It makes sense to consider Milan and Bergamo in conjunction - the distance between them is about 50 km. For these same 50 km, Bergamo is closer to the resorts discussed above. For example, from here it is approximately two hours' drive to Adamello-Ski(Adamello Ski) And Andalo(Andalo), two and a half hours - until Madonna di Campiglio(Madonna di Campiglio), a little longer - until Val Gardena(Val Gardena). In other words, if you are interested in the listed destinations, then they are quite accessible through Bergamo, and, by and large, through Milan too. However, you should not ignore other ski regions located near Milan and Bergamo.

First of all, let's mention Bormio(Bormio), which is located about a three-hour drive from both Milan and Innsbruck and Verona (Bergamo is somewhat closer). This place is famous not only as a ski resort, but also as a thermal resort. Nearby is also Livigno(Livigno), no less interesting from a skiing point of view, and Santa Caterina(Santa Caterina di Valfurva), a quieter and more relaxing resort.

There are excellent ski regions closer to Milan. We especially note Aosta and the region of the same name Val d'Aosta(Val d'Aosta), including such well-known resorts as Cervinia(Cervinia), Monte Rosa(Monte Rosa), Courmayeur(Courmayeur) etc. These places do not need any special introduction and are very popular among mountain skiing enthusiasts. Moreover, in some places people ski here not only in winter, but also in summer (primarily in Cervinia and neighboring Swiss Zermatt). It is more convenient to get here through Milan Malpensa Airport than through Bergamo Orio al Serio: the journey by car takes about one and a half to two hours. It takes much longer to travel by public transport. Perhaps the most convenient option is a direct bus from Milan (see www.savda.it), although you can also get there by rail (with two or three transfers to Aosta).

Finally, let's say a few words about places that often go unnoticed. Within an hour and a half drive from Bergamo you can find a number of quite interesting resorts. Let's note two areas. The first form Foppolo(Foppolo), San Simone(San Simone) And Karona(Carona) in the Val Brembana valley. The second includes places like Presolana – Monte Pora(Presolana Monte Pora) And Kolere(Colere) in the Val Seriana valley.

Via Turin it is convenient to get to the resorts of the valley discussed above Val d'Aosta(Val d'Aosta). If you go by car, the journey takes about an hour and a half - faster than through Milan. Another area that should not be overlooked when talking about ski resorts near Turin is the so-called Milky Way(Vialattea, you can often find a separate spelling - Via Lattea), a region on the border between Italy and France. Here it is worth paying attention in particular to Sestriere(Sestriere), Sauze d'Oulx(aka Sauze d'Oulx, Sauze d'Oulx) And Sansicario(Sansicario) and also in French Montgenevre(Montgenevre). It’s still not far from Turin airport – an hour and a half drive. In addition, you can quickly get to Oulx, which is only five kilometers from the Milky Way, by train (it takes just over an hour from Turin, without transfers).

Finally, it’s worth turning your attention to the south, where there is a fairly popular resort called Limone Piemonte(Limone Piemonte). From Turin it's about an hour and a half by car. You can also get here via Genoa or Nice.

Ski resorts in the Apennines

Continuing our review of Italian ski resorts, let’s say a few words about the Apennines. The Apennine resorts, of course, are in many ways inferior to the Alpine ones, but they also have their advantages. Let's say, if you want to go somewhere for a day from Rome or Florence to go skiing and return back the same day, then it is hardly worth going to the Alps. It is both far and expensive. But the Apennines are always nearby. This is where they come in handy.

In winter there is often snow here, followed by sunny weather, and in spring there are fogs. The resort has a lot of accommodation options: hotels, chalets, residences. Almost all hotels are located near the ski slopes; they have special buses that carry tourists to the ski lifts. Most of the slopes of this resort are suitable for confident skiers, but for beginners there are also one hundred and fifty kilometers of “blue” ski tracks. There are two hundred kilometers of “red” trails, fifty kilometers of “black” ones, and they are all in excellent condition. The mountain slopes are served by hundreds of lifts. The resort can be divided into three ski areas: - “Monte Sizes”, at an altitude of two thousand six hundred meters; - “Monte Banqueta”, at an altitude of two thousand five hundred and fifty-five meters; - "Monte Fraiteve", at an altitude of two thousand seven hundred and one meters. This is a whole complex of resorts, smoothly transitioning from one to another, with tens of kilometers of excellent trails of varying difficulty, a lot of hotels, attractions, restaurants, cafes, shops. The most famous of these resorts are Dolomiti Superski and Skirama Dolomiti. Since Trento has a domestic airport, you can easily reach it from any other airport. Winters at the resort are real alpine: frosty and snowy, with cloudy and sunny days replacing each other. The season starts in November and ends at the end of April. There are plenty of accommodation options here: modern hotels and traditional chalets. The total length of the resort's trails is more than seven hundred kilometers, and there are also fourteen snow parks.

The resort has both difficult trails and gentle, even ones. It is worth paying attention to the well-designed routes for cruising, allowing you to enjoy the local natural beauty of the region, and another such route gives the opportunity to go around the Sella mountain range, admiring the views of beautiful valleys, small villages and farms, lost among the mountains. For a family holiday, we recommend going to the southwestern part of the Trento resort: there are almost no difficult trails, steep dangerous slopes, mostly the slopes are designed for beginner skiers and children.

Ski resort Canazei– this Italian winter resort stands on the Belvedere plateau, in the Val di Fassa, and is attractive to tourists who love flat skiing or snowboarding. A little to the side is the Pordoi Pass, located at an altitude of two thousand two hundred and thirty-nine meters, where you can ski on the most difficult trails, suitable only for professional skiers and extreme sports enthusiasts. The average winter temperature here is minus three degrees; rarely it can drop to minus six degrees. The season begins in December and ends in April, during which time there is quite heavy snowfall.

The routes are different: there are both difficult and easy descents. The total length of the slopes is two hundred kilometers, with four hundred and sixty lifts lifting vacationers to them. Between the Grohmann and Salei mountain peaks there is a snow park suitable for boarder cross. In Canazei, almost a hundred hotels await tourists, with different levels of service, for every taste and budget: villas, hostels, bungalows. There are many cafes and restaurants here. If you want to take a break from skiing, we recommend visiting the Eghes center to undergo a course of relaxing thalassotherapy, go to the sauna, and swim in the pool.

Ski resort Bormio– is located in the northern part of the country, in the picturesque Valtellina valley, belonging to the Lombardy region. It is well equipped and differs from other Italian winter resorts in its versatility: tourists come here both to ski on snow-covered mountain slopes and flat slopes, engage in various winter activities, and to undergo wellness procedures to one of the nine thermal springs located here.

Local waters help cope with skin problems, joint diseases and nervous system disorders. The closest airports to Bormio are in Tirano and Milan, from where you can reach your holiday destination in an hour. Winters are quite mild, but long, so the season starts from the beginning of November and ends at the end of April. But on the mountain peaks the snow does not melt, so skiing on the Stelvio Pass is possible all year round. Mostly the winter temperature here is minus six degrees, but sometimes the thermometer drops to minus fifteen. There is a fifty-kilometer network of tangled trails, partly located on the slopes of Cima Bianca. The longest route is eight kilometers: it starts from a mountain peak and ends near the city. Tourists are offered night skiing twice a week. Vacationers love to visit the local “snow park” at Cima Bianca, with an area of one hundred and fifty thousand square meters, at an altitude of two thousand three hundred meters. The resort is part of the Alta Valtellina ski complex, in addition to Bormio, which includes other Italian winter ski resorts - Livigno and San Colombano. If you have a single ski pass, you can ride them too. Specifically in Bormio there are three ski areas: - “Santa Caterina” - world-class competitions are regularly held here; - "Oga-Valdidentro"; - "Bormio-2000". The resort has many trails for tourists with different skill levels. There are also many hotels and restaurants here. Ski resort Livigno– is located near the Swiss border, thirty kilometers from the resort of Bormio. Livigno is a fairly young resort, but it has already become one of the best in Europe and won the prestigious World Snow Award. Fans of freestyle skiing and snowboarding love to relax at this ski resort, as its mountain slopes are ideal for these sports. The height of the snow cover reaches two and a half meters. The season starts in November and ends in April. The resort of Livigno includes three small villages stretching along the valley for eight kilometers. There are two ski areas: - “Carozello”; - "Motolino". Their height above sea level is two thousand eight hundred meters. Motolino has more difficult slopes. These areas are suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers, because the slopes here are mainly “blue” and “red”. There are ski schools near the ski lifts, where they will be happy to teach you all the intricacies of the ski slopes. The total length of the resort's trails is hundreds of kilometers. There are twenty-eight lifts here. The longest descent is seven kilometers, and the elevation difference is from one thousand eight hundred sixteen to two thousand eight hundred meters. The total length of flat ski slopes is forty kilometers. Livigno has a boardercross track and a halfpipe. You can stay in apartments, chalets, cottages and hotels, many of which are located near the ski lifts and have beautiful views of the Alpine beauty from their windows. There are many restaurants, cafes, bars and discos in Livigno. At this resort you can also enjoy dog sled racing, bowling, rock climbing, and horse riding.

Ski resort Cervinia- the “pearl” of the Italian Alps and the highest resort in the country, located in a beautiful mountain valley between the rock formations of Monte Cervino, Breithorn, Monte Rosa, Matterhorn, Castore. The season starts at the end of October and ends in May. Winters here are very snowy, but not cold, with many sunny days. By the way, nearby there is a place called “Plateau Rosa Glacier”, located at an altitude of three and a half thousand meters. It is attractive for tourists because the skiing season here begins in June and ends in September.

Tourists who come on holiday to Cervinia have the opportunity to learn not only skiing, but also snowboarding. There are many “blue” slopes, so the resort is ideal for beginner skiers or families with children. Cervinia has one hundred and forty kilometers of excellent ski slopes, flat ski tracks, and fascinating mountain hiking routes. Skiers are served by twenty-three lifts, including cable cars, gondolas, and funiculars. For snowboarders there is a “snowboard park” and a “halfpipe”. The resort's hotels are famous for their high level of service and different classes, but all of them will offer you picturesque views from the windows of their rooms.

Ski resort Val Gardena– is located in the northwestern part of the Italian Dolomites, and belongs to the Alto Adige district. It will be convenient to get here from the nearest airports: Verona - one hundred and ninety kilometers or from Innsbruck, one hundred and twenty kilometers. The ski season in Val Gardena starts at the beginning of November and ends at the end of April. All this time there has been heavy regular snowfall. Sometimes winter temperatures drop to minus twenty degrees. For holidaymakers in the resort of Val Gardena, we recommend taking the interesting circular route “Sella Ronda”, which includes twenty-six kilometers of descents. But for this you need to purchase a “Dolomita Superski” ski-pass. The resort has three ski areas: - “Ortisei”, at an altitude of one thousand two hundred and thirty-six meters; - “Santa Cristina Val Gardena”, at an altitude of one thousand four hundred and twenty-six meters; - “Selva di Val Gardena”, at an altitude of one thousand five hundred and twenty-six meters. The Santa Cristina trails have a total length of one hundred and seventy-five kilometers, many of them are illuminated at night. There are eighty-three lifts here. The longest descent in this zone is eight kilometers. The length of the flat trails is twenty-four kilometers. You can stay in hotels, cottages, chalets, hostels, apartments. At the resort you can take interesting walks, horse riding, play tennis on indoor courts, squash, bowling, and billiards. Ski resort Dolomites- the largest Italian region for various ski sports, including twelve ski resorts, with a total length of slopes - one thousand two hundred and sixty kilometers, with four hundred and sixty lifts. The Dolomiti Superski has a single ski pass, which includes all the resorts of this complex: Val Gardena, Treves Valli, Val di Fassa, Vale Isarco, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Alta Pusteria", "Kronplatz", "Civetta", "Alta Badia", "San Martino", "Arabba-Marmolada", "Val di Fiemme". Dolomiti resorts are located in three Italian regions: Alto Adige, Trentino, Veneto. The season here starts in November and ends at the end of April. The Sella massif includes four areas: Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Marmolada Arabba, Val di Fassa - they are connected by a network of cable cars and excellent trails, so tourists can move between these resorts completely freely.
