Tenerife is an island that can satisfy the needs of completely different tourists. Thus, Puerto de la Cruz offers an excellent family holiday, and you can have a blast in bustling Las Americas or Costa Adeje, where they offer the widest selection of entertainment. The older generation prefers Los Cristianos; it is calm and measured here. For those who are interested in diving, the southwestern coast of Tenerife awaits. For surfing enthusiasts, we recommend El Medano with its endless beaches and steady wind. Puerto de la Cruz is the main resort of the northern coast, founded in the 16th century and, unlike many other places on the island, it has its own character, traditions and flavor.

Tenerife airports on the map

Tenerife has two airports: northern (Tenerife Norte Aeropuerto - TFN) and southern (enerife Sur Aeropuerto - TFS). The northern one serves domestic flights between the Canary Islands and mainland Spain, while the southern one is intended for international flights.

Territory of Tenerife

Tenerife covers an area of 2,034 square kilometers, making it the second largest Spanish island after Mallorca.

The length of Tenerife is about 80 kilometers, the width is about 6-10 kilometers to 40-50 kilometers, depending on the place. The length of the coast is about 340 kilometers.

When coming to Tenerife for the first time, many tourists prefer the southern part of the island. And there are many reasons for this.

The southern resorts of Tenerife are just a fairy tale

Why are the southern resorts of Tenerife so popular?

The main reason is favorable weather conditions: the climate provides 300 sunny days a year here, and the mountains reliably protect the south and west of the island from any winds.

In addition, rain here is a real rarity. Millions of people come to relax here throughout the year, and even in winter.

In addition, the main tourist resorts are concentrated precisely on the southern coast, which guarantee the best long sandy beaches that meet all the highest requirements, excellent equipment, comfortable hotels for every taste and budget, and first-class service.

They are only 18-20 km from the southern Reina Sofia airport, where all charter flights and flights from mainland Spain land. A distinctive feature of these resorts is their vibrant nightlife, plenty of entertainment, bars, cafes, restaurants and shopping centers. These two resorts seem to merge into a single zone.

The nightlife of Los Cristianos and Las Americas is very rich

On both the right and left, these resorts are adjacent to equally popular tourist centers and villages. Costa Adeje borders Las Americas to the south and has a southwestern location on Tenerife. The beach is intended for a quieter, family vacation.

Family holidays in Tenerife include visiting zoos with a show program, water parks and outdoor attractions. And such a program is relevant all year round: the island’s climate is mild, conducive to all types of active tourism.

One of the most famous parks on the island is Loro Parque; you can safely plan a visit to it for the whole day. The highlight of the park is the dolphin and killer whale show, held as scheduled, the rest of the time you can relax in the tropical park, visit the stylized “Thai Village”, watch parrots, gorillas, chimpanzees, penguins and other animals in the thematic areas of Loro Parque. The aquarium complex with glass tunnels where marine life is kept deserves special attention.

While vacationing in Icod de los Vinos, tourists can add to the list of children's attractions the Butterfly Museum, where about 800 insects are kept in recreated tropical conditions, differing from the usual moths and butterflies in their bright colors or sizes.

The active recreation centers at the resort are huge water parks, which are among the largest in Europe. Siam Park, decorated in Thai style, and Aqualand Costa Adeje, which has its own dolphinarium, are located very close, in the vicinity of the resort of Playa de la Americas. It’s very convenient for tourists: you can compare the parks’ slides in one day or divide the entertainment part into two days.

The excursion program with children should include a trip to the Jungle Park and an educational walk through the Pueblo Chico miniature park, where the most famous architectural objects of the island are collected, as well as a trip to the interactive playground

Tenerife - Canary Islands on the world map - a piece of paradise or an unattractive place?

In the Atlantic Ocean there is an archipelago of volcanic origin called the Canary islands, which belongs to the Kingdom of Spain and consists of seven large inhabited islands and many small ones. Where is Tenerife on the world map?

In the very center of the Canary Islands is the largest and most densely populated island of the entire group, Tenerife. Tenerife can be recognized on the world map by its unusual outline shape, reminiscent of a ham. The area of the island is about 2000 km2, the population is 900 thousand people. The capital of the island is the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Map of Tenerife.

Interesting to know! Tenerife is called a miniature continent because it has more than one climate zone, hence the incredible differences in climate, flora and fauna, and topography. The island is divided in the middle by a mountain range, which divides it into northern and southern parts.

Northern Tenerife is colder, strong winds blow here and the air temperature is always lower than in the south. However, this is simply a paradise for vegetation - the plant world here is diverse and unique. This part of the island is intended more for tourist routes, sightseeing and excursions. There are many ancient towns with amazing colorful streets and a huge number of attractions - both natural and man-made.

North Tenerife.

The southern part is distinguished by warm and dry weather, wonderful equipped beaches with black volcanic sand, washed by the Atlantic, and well-developed infrastructure.

Which part of Tenerife should you choose for your holiday – South or North

One of the largest and most famous resorts in the south of Tenerife is Las Americas. It was created specifically for tourists and is considered one of the largest and most popular resorts. The beaches here are well-equipped, there is a pedestrian promenade with many clubs, discos and restaurants. Having bought a tour and coming here, tourists will probably hear not only Spanish, but also Russian speech, since many Russians vacation here.

Next to Las Americas there is another resort - Los Cristianos - the old town. Here it will be pleasant to stroll through the colorful Spanish narrow streets with pastry shops and fruit shops, drink coffee in an open-air cafe and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere. However, this place is best considered for walking; it’s not worth staying here for a large number of days, since there is only one hotel built here, and the beaches are located near the port and far enough away to swim there every day.

A little north of Las Americas and Los Cristianos Tenerife is the town of Arona, it is slightly less popular, but nevertheless has a well-developed infrastructure and beaches with all amenities. The most popular resorts in Arona are Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas. They are famous for offering scuba diving and water sports.

Next door to Arona in Tenerife is the picturesque site of San Miguel de Abona, which has been awarded cultural heritage status. There are various attractions here - the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, the El Capitan house-museum, the house in which Juan Betancourt was born.

If you wish, you can visit the San Blas Ecological Reserve, which has great natural value, and the Yellow Mountain Natural Monument, which are very popular among tourists. This resort will not leave golf lovers indifferent; there are two wonderful courses - Golf de Sur and Amarilla Golf. Just like in Arona, this resort offers water and underwater sports in the sports port of La Marina San Miguel.

Moving strictly north from this resort, you can get to the highest village of Tenerife - Vilaflor. There is no access to the sea, but despite this, a huge number of tourists arrive here every day. Since this place has the purest mountain air and an appropriate climate, most tourists come here for health benefits, especially many visitors visit this place with diseases of the respiratory system. Vilaflora also has healing springs with mineral water.

The routes created for visitors follow paths that were previously used by the Guanche tribes - the inhabitants of the island - to drive cattle through a narrow, steep valley to pasture.

Vilaflor has several natural reserves and is rich in historical heritage.

A small resort in the south of Tenerife, Playa Paraiso, which translated into Russian means “Paradise Beach,” will allow you to enjoy yourself in solitude. There are only four multi-storey hotels in the center on the coast, a couple of shops and several night discos. However, while it is possible to enjoy the silence here, it is unlikely to be near the oceans, despite the name of the resort, since the shore here is rocky and entry into the ocean is not very convenient.

In the southeastern part of the island there is the fishing town of Las Galletas with a black beach of volcanic sand; it is removed from the main tourist areas - this is a place for a more relaxing holiday. Heading to the north of Tenerife, you first come to Candelaria - the city of pilgrims, where the main attraction is the Basilica of Candelaria - the Catholic Church, and then to the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife itself.

Port in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Traveling around the island, you can’t help but look into the medieval village of Santiago del Teide, founded in the 16th century, which is interesting for its history and traditions. A must-see is the Baroque church of San Fernando, which was built in the 17th century. The church attracts tourists with its mysterious architecture and beautiful paintings inside.

This place is also famous for the fact that it is from here that the narrow-gauge serpentine road to the village of Masca begins, which is located in the upper part of the famous Masca gorge in Tenerife at an altitude of approximately 600 meters. It is one of the deepest in Tenerife, and the route, visited daily by tourists from different countries from the top to the ocean, is approximately 9 kilometers - this is a whole trail of obstacles, here you have to jump over rivers and climb over rocks. Therefore, have a good rest the day before, and before the gorge, have courage and patience.

If you want to enjoy a relaxing holiday and improve your health, then you should visit the city of Bahamar. Bajamar is a small fishing village located in the northern part of Tenerife. This is a coastal secluded place with mountainous areas, with unique natural pools and the picturesque massifs of Anaga Park.

For lovers of untouched nature, the island of La Gomera is a must-visit; the tourist infrastructure here is extremely poorly developed, however, here is one of the significant attractions of the Canary Islands - the Garajonay National Park, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Here you can see a giant baobab, a relict heather grove, three-meter dandelions, extensive palm plantations and much more. You can get here by ferry from Tenerife.

Relict laurel-heather forest in La Gomera.

What to take on your trip will depend on the purpose for which you are going there. If you plan to just lie on the beach, swim and sunbathe, then there will be one set of things, if you plan on a more active vacation, then another, if you visit expensive restaurants, then a third.

However, both travelers will have the same list of documents: passport, visa, insurance. It will not be superfluous to know that upon arrival at the airport you will be asked to fill out a migration card in which you will need to provide your details in detail.

Important! Keep the torn part of your migration card until the end of your trip, as it will need to be shown on the way back at the airport.

Spain is a wonderful, amazing and tourist-attracting country in Europe. When you travel, you want to take in everything at once - to visit both the island part and the continental part, but this, as a rule, is problematic. To decide - open a simple school atlas, take a look at the Canary Islands, see where and in what amazing place on the world map Tenerife is located - pack your suitcase and boldly go on vacation and you will not regret your choice for a second. And as the Spaniards say – Bienvenida!
