Stone mushrooms

A fascinating excursion on an airboat to the Akkurum tract, a place whose natural feature is Stone mushrooms. Mysterious stone statues were formed under the influence of centuries-old winds and in the process of long-term washing away of rocks of varying hardness. Stone mushrooms reach seven meters in height, while the thickness of the “mushroom stem” in diameter is no more than half a meter. Rocks that were distinguished by their superhardness and strength over time acquired the appearance of mushroom caps. The stone formations are located directly in the river valley not far from the mouth of the Chulyshman River. The area where the river flows into Lake Teletskoye rises against the backdrop of dense forests, a rich variety of flora and fauna, and can be seen among sprawling meadows. All this creates a beautiful landscape picture against the backdrop of the picturesque landscapes of Altai.

The motor ship "Pioneer of Altai" has a very interesting history. It was built back in 1964 and for the first two years it worked for the Moscow River Shipping Company. Then in 1967-1968. The first unusual event in his life occurs - a transfer to Lake Teletskoye.

The crossing took place under extreme conditions for this type of vessel. From Moscow, the ship left along the Moscow Canal, the Volga-Baltic Waterway and the White Sea-Baltic Canal to the White Sea, from where via the Northern Sea Route to the Gulf of Ob. From the Gulf of Ob the ship arrived along the Ob River to Barnaul, where it wintered during the inter-navigation period of 1967-1968. During wintering, the vessel was lightened as much as possible by dismantling easily removable equipment. Immediately after the opening of the Ob River in 1968, the ship went to Biysk, where it awaited the onset of the flood. As soon as the water level in Biya rose to the required level, the ship moved up the river under its own power. Until the village of Turochak, Biya was navigable in those years, but higher up there are rifts and rapids with high current speeds, insurmountable for vessels of this class. Therefore, in such sections of the river, the ship was helped to move by tractors that walked along the edge of the bank and pulled the ship with cables.

motor ship "Pioneer Altai"

In the 70-80s. “Pioneer of Altai” took tourists around Lake Teletskoye. In the 90s, a period of decline began, the ship was often idle, and when serious repairs were required in 1997, there was no money for it. The rusty carcass rested near the shore. In 2007, the prosecutor's office decided to scrap the ship.

In 2009, the ship was purchased by an entrepreneur from the village of Iogach, Ivan Yuzhakov. The new owner began restoring the ship. At first the ship was restored only in the rack-mount version. It housed a cafe, a cinema hall and a museum. But in 2012, the owner decided to put the ship on the move. In 2014, the ship again accepted passengers on board. This is a story full of extraordinary twists and turns.

motor ship "Pioneer Altai", boarding the ship

So, at ten in the morning, in the drizzling rain, we set off on a trip to the Korbu waterfall. Unfortunately, the weather did not allow us to take beautiful photographs... The journey to the waterfall takes about an hour and a half. A story about Lake Teletskoye is heard from the speakers.

Lake Teletskoye is the fifth deepest lake in Russia. Its average depth is 175 m, and its maximum is 325 m. Its length is almost 78 km, its average width is 1-2 km, and its maximum is 5 km.

start of the excursion

The northern part of the lake, along which we began our journey, stretches clearly from west to east. The shores of the lake are steep and steep almost everywhere; the mountains framing the lake reach a height of 2000-2500 m.

The ship goes first closer to the southern shore. We pass by Iogach on the right

and Artybash on the left.

On the left we see several houses - the town of Kakaiha.

Here we pass the mouth of the Oyor River (translated from Altai as “hollow out”), there are a lot of fish here. The border of the Altai State Nature Reserve runs along Oyor. Steep banks begin from the mouth of the Oyor River, the bottom is not visible at all.

Our gaze is drawn to Mount Cheptu (“barrier, redoubt, refuge”), 1273 m high, which juts out into the lake as a cape.

Mount Cheptu

Looking at the shore, it seems that chaos is happening here, rock outcrops, screes are visible, a wide variety of shrubs and mixed forest grow on the rocks.

Mount Cheptu

The Karatash cordon is located nearby. 3 km from Cape Karatash is the town of Baikazan (“Big Cauldron, Kazan”). These places are rich in game.

Cordon Karatash

On the right is the mouth of the Samysh River (“Stab, stick”). In general, about 70 rivers (the largest is Chulushman)) and 150 streams flow into Lake Teletskoye, and only one river flows out - Biya.

mouth of the Samysh River

We are heading to Cape Azhi (“The place where people pass through the mountain”) - the gateway to Lake Teletskoye. Cape Azhi is rightfully considered one of the most picturesque places of Lake Teletskoye. Here, snow-white Cambrian marbles, hundreds of millions of years old, descend steeply into the water with powerful, impenetrable cliffs. Mount Azhi has a height of 1124 m. On the left you can see clearings among the taiga with typical herbs. This place is called Ayubaltyrgan (“Bear Bunch”).

There is a small cove at Cape Aji. A tiny island was hidden in it - one of two on the lake. From the water it is almost invisible - it merges with the shore.

From Cape Azhi the lake becomes much wider. This place is considered the gateway to Lake Teletskoye.

In the distance the peak of the Korbu ridge with a height of 2024 m is visible, the Abakan ridge is visible. Behind Cape Azhi there is a small bay. The Yurga River (“Sacrificial River”) flows into the bay.

On the right, the gates of Lake Teletskoye are formed by Cape Nyanskoch.

It looks like the head of a dragon guarding the entrance to the lake.

Cape Kuvan (“Plant”) soon appears on our right hand,

from which the lake turns south almost at a right angle and then goes almost strictly from north to south.

Almost immediately around the bend we see the destination of our journey on the ship. The shores of the lake in this place are steep and steep.

We make a stop to visit the most beautiful waterfall on Lake Teletskoye - Korbu (“Bush, young shoots”).

The ship stays offshore for an hour. During this time you can stretch your legs on the shore, buy souvenirs,

And of course - visit the waterfall. Entrance to the reserve territory is 100 rubles. A path in the form of a wooden flooring has been laid to the waterfall, which allows you to leave nature untouched by the feet of numerous tourists.

The waterfall is not visible from the shore; it is located a hundred meters above the mouth of the Korbu River, running down from the ridge of the same name. A couple of minutes from the shore of the lake - and before your eyes there is a huge mass of water falling vertically from a stone ledge 12.5 meters high!

Views of Corbu can be enjoyed from the spacious observation deck,

Or you can walk very close along the wide stones, like steps.

The inconvenience of traveling on a large ship here will be a huge number of tourists in a small area, so you should prepare in advance and hurry up to get to the waterfall among the first.

tourists from the boat at the waterfall

Opposite the mouth of the Korbu River is the deepest place of Lake Teletskoye - a depression 323 meters deep. There is a legend about this depression and the appearance of Lake Teletskoye.

A long time ago, on the site of Lake Teletskoye there was a large plain through which the Chulyshman River flowed. All the rivers that now flow into the lake flowed into it. This large fertile valley abounded in good meadows. Countless flocks of sheep, herds of cows, and herds of horses grazed across the meadows. There were many animals in the taiga and fish in the rivers.

The head of the tribe inhabiting the valley was Khan Tele. The Khan had enormous wealth, but his most important asset was a magical golden sword. Khan Tele, going to war, always girded himself with this sword and never knew defeat.

Little Chile River

His neighbor, Khan Bogdo, found out about the khan’s wealth. Knowing that he could not take possession of the golden sword by force, he decided to take it by cunning. Tele's wife, the beautiful Chalchu, loved jewelry, and Tele spoiled her with them. Khan Bogdo sent Tele all kinds of gifts and an invitation to come visit. After consulting with Chalchu, Tele accepted the invitation, unaware of Bogdo’s treachery. He did not put on his golden sword, and he ordered his retinue to go without weapons, no matter how much Chalchu begged him: “I’m going to visit my friend, and not to the camp of the enemies - I don’t need a sword!” Chalchu, holding anxiety and fear in her heart, hung the magic sword in place.

mouth of the Kokshi River

Khan Tele with a rich caravan set off on a long journey. After 10 days he was met by the advance detachment of Bogdo. By the end of the next day, the caravan reached the tents of Bogdo. A whole army had already come out to meet us. Khan Tele expected the honors due to him as a distinguished guest, but, to his surprise, he was received as a prisoner. By order of Khan Bogdo, Khan Tele and his companions were killed. At that moment, when the head of the gullible Khan Tele rolled from his mighty shoulders, the golden magic sword fell from the wall and fell. Falling, he cut the ground and went deep into the depths, forming a huge gaping chasm between the mountains. Khan Chalchu's wife found herself on a rock at the edge of the abyss. She realized that she had lost her husband, and grief overtook her. Hot tears flowed and flowed from her beautiful, radiant eyes. They flowed so long and strongly that the abyss overflowed and overflowed into lakes.

And so that people would not forget about the treachery of Khan Bogdo, Chalchu turned into a talkative stream. And the lake was named after the khan - Teleskiy (Teletsky).

The southern tip of Lake Teletskoye is covered with snow in July

From the parking lot, Cape Chorlok (“Drop”) is visible in the distance. Cape Chorlok represents one of the spurs of the Abakan Range.

southern part of Lake Teletskoye

After an hour's stop, the ship sets off on its return journey.

Clinging to the eastern shore, we slowly pass by another waterfall - Kishte.

Kishte waterfall

This 8-meter waterfall is one of the largest on Lake Teletskoye. At a depth of 20 meters from the shore, the Kishte River noisily collapses from a height. Kishte can be clearly heard from the lake, which is probably why it is called “calling”. Another translation option for Kishte is sable.

Kishte waterfall

You can only see Kishte from the water, as it is located on the territory of the reserve.

viewing the Kishte waterfall only from the water

We are going to Cape Chichilgan (“Disintegrated”) (to our right). At this point the lake turns to the west. Opposite Cape Chichilgan is the very picturesque Cape Ayran (“Forked Stone”). These two capes are often called the gates to Kamginsky Bay (“Kam” - blood). The name of Cape Ayran (or Ayrytash - “Fork Mountain”) is due to the fact that the part that most protrudes into the lake is like a block that has fallen off from the main massif, connected to the shore by a low isthmus. The latter is flooded when the water is high. Then the tip of the cape is a miniature rocky island covered with bushes, among which several trees rise.

Cape Ayran

Kamginsky Bay is the largest bay on the lake: 6 km long, about 1 km wide, and about 40 m deep in most parts. Several rivers flow into the bay. The largest is Kamga.

Kamginsky Bay

Moving along the northern shore of the lake, we slowly return back to Iogach.

The weather is gloomy, heavy clouds are creeping over the northern part of the lake. They even go down the slopes of mountains, hiding their peaks.

clouds over the lake

By the way, Lake Teletskoe (Telesskoe, Telezhskoe) received its name about 400 years ago from Russian pioneers, because the Turkic Teles tribes lived on its shores. From time immemorial, local peoples called it Altyn-Kol, Golden Lake.

The legend about the origin of the Altai name is as follows.

...One day the gods were angry with the Altai people; the animals left the forests, the fish left the rivers and lakes; trees and grass withered; livestock died out on pastures. The toiling bees did not store golden honey that year either. Hunger has come to the Altai land - there is nothing to throw into the cauldron, nothing to put in the mouth, nothing to give to the child.

People were grieving; only one Altai man did not grieve - he had a large piece of gold, the size of a horse’s head, hidden for a rainy day. So that rainy day came, all the food in the yurt ran out, the last piece of flatbread was eaten, the last sip of kumiss was drunk. The Altai man looked at his wife and children, pulled out a piece of gold from a secluded corner, grunted, put it on his shoulder and went through the surrounding camps - to exchange gold for dried meat for himself, for fresh cakes for his wife, for mare's milk for the children.

stone bay

I walked for a long time, walked around many yurts, saw a lot of people. People have no food; and even if someone has a piece of flatbread and a sip of milk, people don’t want to exchange food for gold. It is beautiful, gold, shiny, pleasing to the eye, joyful to the heart, but only cold and hard; You won’t bite him, you won’t throw him into the cauldron, you won’t let the child eat. It was in vain that the Altai man walked around the yurts, in vain he carried a piece of gold the size of a horse’s head. And when he was completely desperate, he climbed Mount Altyntu, which rises above the lake, cursed his bitter life and the cruel gods, and threw the gold far into the lake. He threw it, and then jumped after it. A wave splashed, rolled onto the shores, and calmed down. And since then the lake has been called Altyn-Kel - Golden.

We return to the pier in Iogach 4.5 hours after departure. On this day, the ship makes another voyage (there are much fewer passengers on it, but they were also unlucky with the weather - it was going to rain heavily, and it was getting dark right before our eyes).

A tour of Lake Teletskoye by boat is a leisurely walk along the nearby part of the lake, an opportunity to leisurely enjoy the views. Numerous boats also offer excursions on the lake. The price of the trip is the same, the route is slightly different - there are several stops, but you fly across the lake faster (and in strong waves, with less comfort).
