Baggage rules on KLM flights

Hand luggage

General carry-on baggage allowances apply for intercontinental flights and within Europe.

"Economy class":

  • 1 place, dimensions 55x35x25 cm;
  • You can have an accessory in the form of a handbag, briefcase or laptop with dimensions of 40x30x15 cm.
    The total weight of items should not exceed 12 kg.

"Business Class":

  • 2 places with the same dimensions;
  • One accessory with the same dimensions as for “economy class” is allowed, but the total weight of hand luggage in this case is 18 kg.

Due to the limited capacity of overhead bins in aircraft cabins, KLM may request that you check in free hand luggage if you are carrying a large bag.

Free checked baggage on KLM airlines

The rules differ and depend on where you are flying and in what class.

If you have "Economy class" on intercontinental flight:

1 piece of luggage whose size does not exceed 158 cm in the sum of 3 dimensions, including handles and wheels. Permissible weight 23 kg.

Special conditions for baggage transportation are provided for loyalty program participants.

"Economy class" For flights to Europe it is provided exclusively with hand luggage. However, if you are a member of KLM's loyalty programs, you can carry 2 pieces of free baggage with a total weight of up to 23 kg and 158 cm in the sum of 3 dimensions, including handles and wheels.

For “economy class” Free checked baggage is not provided for flights from the following countries: Belarus, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Tunisia, Morocco, Israel, Algeria. Surcharge tariff:

1 piece of luggage weighing 23 kg when paying online on the KLM airline website - 15 euros; at the check-in counter you will have to pay 30 euros for a piece of luggage.

"Business Class" for flights to Europe:

  • 2 pieces of luggage, weighing 32 kg each. The dimensions of luggage must not exceed 158 cm in the sum of 3 dimensions, including handles and wheels. Additional conditions for baggage transportation in this class for loyalty program participants.

"Business Class" for flights to Japan, Africa, USA and Madagascar:

  • 2 pieces weighing 23 kg each.

For flights from Japan, if the ticket was purchased directly in Japan, “business class” is allowed 1 piece of baggage weighing 32 kg.

Excess baggage allowance

The fee for this type of baggage also depends on the flight and class. In this case, the weight of one baggage should not exceed 23 kg, and the dimensions should not exceed 158 cm. In case of discrepancy, an additional fee is provided.

Transportation of sports equipment is a paid service, for which you must reserve a seat no later than 48 hours before the flight. The cost is affected by the size of the equipment and the direction of flight.

Musical instruments can be taken with you into the cabin or checked in as luggage. The tariff also depends on the weight and direction of the flight.

Baggage and transfers

If your trip includes a connection, your checked baggage is usually sent to your final destination. This means that your luggage will automatically be loaded onto your next flight.

There are a few exceptions to this rule:

  • If you purchased two or more tickets from different airlines with different rules
  • If you are connecting from a France or KLM flight to a domestic flight, such as a domestic flight in the USA
  • If you arrive at one airport and the next flight departs from another airport
  • If the transfer time to the next flight is more than 24 hours
  • If your travel route includes travel by bus or train
In these cases, your baggage may not be automatically forwarded to your final destination. You will need to collect your luggage and re-check it in for the next part of your trip.

The destination of your luggage is indicated on the luggage tag that you will receive when checking your luggage.

Please ensure that your full name is written on both the inside and outside of each piece of checked baggage.

KLM is a Dutch airline founded in 1919. In this article, we will provide the necessary information about the carry-on baggage allowance on KLM flights: the number of items allowed, as well as size and weight restrictions.

Carrying hand luggage on KLM

The airline has established a general carry-on baggage allowance for passengers, which is included in the fare.

Economy class

  • 1 piece of hand luggage 55x35x25 cm
  • total weight - maximum 12 kg

Business Class on European and intercontinental flights:

  • 2 pieces of hand luggage, each no more than 55x35x25 cm
  • 1 accessory, such as a light suitcase, briefcase or laptop, no more than 40x30x15 cm
  • total weight - maximum 18 kg

KLM warns that large bags that fit inside carry-on dimensions may still need to be checked in for free at the gate due to limited capacity in overhead bins.

Traveling with children

If your child has their own (reserved) seat, they can carry the same amount of carry-on baggage as an adult passenger, including a foldable stroller and a child car seat.

For a child under 2 years of age who is traveling on your lap, without a separate seat, you can carry:

  • 1 piece of hand luggage with items for caring for an infant weighing no more than 12 kg, whose dimensions do not exceed 55x35x25 cm.
  • 1 foldable baby stroller
  • 1 child car seat (seat)

On intercontinental flights, KLM only has a few special meal kits for infants. They are provided free of charge and do not need to be pre-ordered.

You can bring 1 collapsible stroller per child free of charge on all KLM flights. If your child's stroller (maximum size 15x30x100 cm) does not fit under the seat or in the overhead compartment for hand luggage, you can check it in free of charge and hand it over to the staff at the aircraft entrance.

Musical instruments

You can carry a musical instrument as hand luggage or buy space for it in the cabin.

1) as hand luggage

You are allowed to carry a small musical instrument (violin or smaller instrument) in the cabin instead of hand luggage. The instrument must fit in the overhead carry-on compartment. The dimensions of the tool should not exceed 55x35x25 cm.

2) on an additional place

Tools with large dimensions can be transported in an additional place. The length of the instrument should not exceed 140 cm and weight 45 kg. Please reserve your extra seat in advance through KLM Customer Service.

Carriage of liquids

You can carry liquids in your hand luggage in small containers (no more than 100 ml) per item. All liquids must be placed in one transparent, tightly closed plastic bag with a volume of no more than 1 liter. The bag must be closed, and the containers must be suitable for the size of the bag and fit easily into it. One plastic bag is allowed per person.

But you can always carry:

  • baby food for consumption during the flight;
  • medications for use during the flight with a prescription or certificate from the attending physician;
  • special dietary foods for consumption during the flight.

Duty free goods

When traveling within Europe, you can carry liquids purchased in the duty-free zone. Liquids you purchase, such as alcoholic beverages and perfumes, will be packaged and sealed. The stamp is valid for one day. You should not open the sealed package until you arrive at your final destination, even if your trip includes a connecting flight.

If you are connecting on a connecting flight at an airport in the European Union, including Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, you can carry duty-free liquids and gels purchased at non-EU airports. However, when connecting at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, these liquids will be checked in at the boarding gate.

Checking electronic devices on flights to the USA and Canada

On flights from Amsterdam-Schiphol or Paris-Charles de Gaulle to destinations in the United States or Canada, all battery-powered electronic devices in carry-on baggage are subject to additional screening. At the boarding gate, these devices must be removed from their case or case, turned on, and confirmed to function.

E-Sigs

In most countries, you can only carry e-cigarettes and all e-cigarette products (including extra batteries) in your carry-on baggage. Since the rules for transporting e-cigarettes may vary from country to country, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the laws of the countries that are included in your itinerary.

However, the use of electronic cigarettes and recharging their batteries are prohibited on board KLM.

Therefore, lithium batteries and power banks for personal use in devices such as laptops, mobile phones and DVD players, as well as for medical equipment, are restricted and can only be carried in hand luggage.

Each battery must be packed separately in its original packaging. If you do not keep the original packaging, you should cover the contact surface of the batteries with insulating tape and pack each battery in a separate plastic bag.
